Vital away win for Dreigiau

Emlyn gained revenge on the only side to have beaten them in the WRU Conference this season with an excellent away win in Bridgend on Saturday. As per the previous encounter the home side, probably mindful of Emlyn's scrummaging power, opted for uncontested scrums from the start of the game. This time it did not affect the red and whites as marshalled by veteran backs Emyr Jones and Barry Thomas the young Emlyn side defended superbly.

The home side took an early lead with a penalty kick but Emlyn outside half Crwys Rees soon levelled matters with a penalty. Emlyn then took the lead with an excellent individual try by pwerhouse winger Ifan Davies who waltzed past a couple of would be tacklers to cross in the corner for an unconverted try. The home side managed responded soon after with an unconverted try of their own to level the scores at the interval.

The first twenty minutes of the second half belonged to Emlyn as they really turned on the style and rattled the home side with some excellent attacking rugby. Emyr Jones extended Emlyn's lead with a try in the corner which was superbly converted by Crwys Rees who added a penalty shortly after. The home side were not done for and a penalty with ten mintues to go brought them up to thirteen points. Then with time running out their pack powered over for a converted try to give them a two point lead with only minutes left.

Emlyn were not to be denied though and came straight back at the home side and put them under a great deal of pressure. They were awarded a penalty kick some forty metres out and up stepped Crwys Rees who had an excellent game and the outside half slotted over the winning kick to seal a vital win for the red and whites. As well as the two veterans previously mentioned there were some outstanding contributions from a couple of Emlyn students who travelled up from Cardiff to help out the Dreigiau, namely Tomos Rees and Osian Davies, as well as some impressive covering by Mathew Rollins.
