Emlyn lose on the road again

BEDDAU 41 v CRCNE 19

Emlyn travelled to a sunny but cold Mount Pleasant Park to Beddau’s stamping ground and community club who can trace their origins back to the 1900’s.

This bottom of the Championship tussle promised to be an exciting prospect with both sides aiming to improve on their respective defeats of last Saturday.

Emlyn won the toss and chose to play down the gradient with the sun on their backs but against a modest wind. Five minutes in and Emlyn were awarded a penalty due to infringement at the breakdown. Leonard’s kick for touch was wayward, but with the Emlyn pack in hot pursuit and exerting pressure that forced further errors by Beddau, resulting in another penalty being awarded. Leonard’s effort from 10m out went just wide of the posts resulting in a 22m dropout.

Then following some open play and a poor Emlyn clearance kick which was gathered by Beddau’s captain and second rower, Ben White, who powered through some slack Emlyn tackling, linking well with his back division with some excellent interplay resulting in a well taken try duly converted by the influential No10, Hywel Chatham giving a 7-0 lead for the home team.

A poor kick off provided an opportunity for Chatham to relieve any pressure by using the wind to his advantage driving Emlyn back to their 22m line. Emlyn’s line performed well, but Beddau’s forwards were relentless in their pressure, pushing Emlyn back resulting in a handling error gifting Beddau the first scrummage 10m from Emlyn’s try line. Both teams were evenly matched in this phase of the game. Beddau piled on the pressure with their loose play and Emlyn, under pressure, were penalised for an offside infringement. Beddau went for the line and won the ensuing lineout 5m out, providing the platform for a good driving maul which was halted by the Emlyn front eight.

Ten minutes later further pressure from Beddau forced one error after another and Emlyn came under sustained attacks resulting in another penalty for the home team. They elected to go for the set piece 5m out and a missed tackle on their No 9 who managed to get the ball out wide for a lovely try in the corner with an excellent strike from Chatham to take maximum points and a score line of 14 -0.

Emlyn did well to win back their dropout but were faced by a ferocious Beddau backline, who gave Emlyn no room at all to create any patterns of play but were adjudged to have infringed, by excellent referee Aled Evans Cardiff who ensured a good open and fast paced game. Emlyn failed to secure the touch line which culminated in Beddau using the wind for a strong and accurate kick taking Emlyn back to the half way line.

Withstanding sustained attacks by Beddau, Emlyn did well to isolate a Beddau centre and were rewarded with a scrum for holding up the player. Sharing evenly contested scrums, Emlyn were forced into error by the Beddau back rowers resulting in a penalty and a well-struck kick and a lineout gaining some 20m in the process.  Beddau were piling on the pressure and making some powerful and purposeful runs at the Emlyn defence, using good angles and support play to keep the ball alive and flowing. Emlyn to their credit showed some determined defence and did exceptionally well to repel one attack after the other.

Beddau by now wanted to run everything at Emlyn, but Leonard had other ideas and put in a good reliving kick to take some of the pressure off the Emlyn fifteen. Beddau demonstrated their ability to retain the ball for long periods recycling possession at every opportunity.  Beddau backs were now bossing the game having been presented by quality possession from the forwards, and forcing Emlyn on the back foot culminating in another infringement allowing Beddau to gain big metres and minutes later another penalty in front of the post providing an easy slot over by Chatham, taking the score to 17-0.

The ensuing kick off resulted in a handling error by Beddau giving Emlyn a scrum on the Beddau 10m line. A good phase of play by Emlyn with some lovely touches including a reverse pass but eventually loosing momentum and possession in the forward drive. An injury on the half hour mark to Beddau’s second row gave everyone a breather from the fast moving game.

Beddau continued to pile on the pressure and the referee signalled a penalty to the attacking side but playing long advantage to keep the game flowing enabled the centre combination of Riley and Egal to shrug off some poor Emlyn tackling resulting in a well worked try and an excellent conversion by Chatham giving Beddau an extended lead of 24-0.

At the start of the second half the kick off was gathered well by the Emlyn forwards with Shaun Leonard making excellent use of the wind and gaining important field position for his pack. Emlyn enjoyed a good period forcing errors from the Beddau defence. The ensuing lineout on the Beddau 5m line gave Emlyn a good scoring opportunity but the consistency of the Emlyn lineout eluded them on this occasion, as it has on previous occasions at crucial periods in their game, resulting in the classy Chatham putting the ball safe and clearing the lines.

Emlyn to be fair, played with more intense and purpose resulting in Beddau conceding a penalty and their No 8 Jack Hayward being shown the yellow card in the process by the, on the spot referee, Aled Evans. Emlyn elected for a scrummage and after an Emlyn player crossed the line for the touchdown they were adjudged to have pushed the ball forward a few seconds earlier and were called back for a Beddau scrum on their 5m line.

Ten minutes in to the second half Emlyn brought on replacement, club captain Alex Williams, returning from a period of injury and he injected pace, urgency and purpose into the Emlyn game.

Another excellent clearing kick relieved the pressure for the Beddau 14.

In another of Beddau’s attack into Emlyn territory their centre was isolated and penalised for not releasing the ball. Dan Davies made good ground gaining some 25m from a well-struck kick. Fierce Beddau defence resulted in Emlyns No 10 Steffan Evans having to leave the field with a knee injury to be replaced by Dafydd Evans. Some excellent intense and purposeful play by the Emlyn fifteen put winger Llyr Jones in for a try with an excellent conversion kick by Shaun Leonard giving Emlyn maximum points and getting the scoreboard ticking, 24-7.

The drop out was well collected by Emlyn and Lenoard gave a huge reply kick, driving the Green and Gold back to their own 22m line. Beddau won a copy book lineout which, was, once again kicked safely to relieve pressure on his team by Chaham. Emlyn continued to inject pace into the game and putting Beddau on the back foot with purposeful running from the evergreen Brynmor Jones casting aside every effort to tackle him resulting in an excellent try duly converted by Leonard, taking the score to 24 – 14. With the departure of Evans, Emlyn’s number 10, some juggling of the backline resulted in Lenoard assuming the outside half duties and he marshalled play well with some well-placed position kicks.

Beddau were in no mood to rest on their laurels and launched attack after attack into Emlyn territory. Emlyn stifled play and a huge reliving kick by Dan Davies almost on his own line and pushing Beddau back to the half way mark.

An Emlyn infringement on the half way line gave Beddau an excellent opportunity to pin Emlyn back to their own corner with an excellent kick from hand. Beddau won the line and exerted pressure on the Emlyn defence and with good and efficient recycling of the ball, Beddau crossed the line out wide, but failed with the conversion taking the score to 29-14.

Emlyn made further substitutions at this point. After some fast moving rugby Beddau infringed and Emlyn were given a free kick, which was taken and run quickly at the Beddau defence. A poor clearing kick from Beddau’s No 10 put them back under pressure with some excellent interplay by the Emlyn team in attack mode with precise and skilful running by Steff Lloyd, linking well with Jon Hill for a well worked Emlyn try, with the conversion striking the upright for a 29-19 score line.

Beddau to their credit showed that their tank wasn’t empty and set about purposefully attacking the Red and whites, whitewash. Emlyn conceded a penalty and once more Beddau drove them back into the corner. Emlyn pinched the Beddau line but the resulting poor clearance put their side back under pressure once more. Beddau made sure this time, securing their ball and set off on a good phase of play recycling the ball efficiently with a good passage of play leading to a well taken try wide out, the failed conversion took the score to 34-19. Beddau at this point brought on sub Owen Cotton and further determined runs by the Beddau backs almost resulted in a try but a defiant Emlyn defence kept them out.

Beddau sensing that another score was possible set about with determination in their play with good phases of play combining backs and forwards culminating in a well worked try gaining maximum points with a successful conversion 41-19.

Aled Evans brought the game to a close with a well-earned victory for Beddau in what was a good game for the spectator witnessing some entertaining running rugby.
